AMBLER, Pa. – The Temple softball team continues to demonstrate its power, clubbing five homeruns in a game for the second day in a row and defeating Rhode Island 10-2 in the process. The Owls got a hit from every player in the lineup.
The Rams took an early lead with a solid first inning. After Courtney Prendergast singled through the right side and Kelly Coker moved her to second with a sacrifice bunt, Jocelyn Mattison doubled to right center to drive in the first run. Ashley Olson followed with a long single to center field that scored Mattison for the 2-0 lead.
Temple got one of those back in the bottom of the inning when Stephanie Pasquale hit a deep fly ball to centerfield, scoring Annie Marcopolus from third for a sacrifice fly. Devynne Nelons tied the game in the second with a solo homerun to left field, her ninth of the year.
From there, all of the offense belonged to the Cherry & White. TU got two in the bottom of the third when Pasquale homered, driving in Sarah Prezioso who had reached on a fielder's choice earlier. The dinger was the 13th of the season for Pasquale, tying the Temple single-season record.
Prezioso took her turn crushing the ball with a long homerun to right center in the fourth. Ali Robinson singled earlier in the frame to make it a two run shot.
The Owls entered the fifth with a 6-2 lead and Kelsey Dominik quickly made it 7-2 with a homer to center to open the inning. After Nelons doubled as the next batter, Kayla Cook gave her team a 9-2 advantage with the fifth homerun of the game for TU. Two batters later, Marcopolus walked to put the winning run on, and one out later, Prezioso doubled to right center to end the game via the mercy-run rule.
Dominik (11-5) got the win, going the distance and surrendering just four hits, striking out three and walking none. Only one of Rhode Island's hits came after the first inning. Sam Bedore (5-13) took the loss, giving up 10 hits, six runs, one walk and fanning two. Caitlin Kennedy came on in relief to pitch the fifth, giving up four hits and four runs, walking one and striking out two.
Nelons was 3-for-3 with two RBI in the contest, while Prezioso went 3-for-4 with three runs batted in. Pasquale was the other player with multiple hits, going 2-for-2. With her second hit of the day, Pasquale set the Temple single-season mark with 66 on the year.
Temple is 24-22 overall and 11-5 in Atlantic 10 play. The Owls host Massachusetts for a critical doubleheader beginning at noon tomorrow. URI falls to 9-30, 2-11 A-10.
