Temple Football Players Welcome Alumni for PROfessional Day

PHILADELPHIA – The NCAA runs a television commercial that says, “There are over 400,000 student-athletes and just about every one of them will go pro in something other than sports,” which describes the NCAA initiative to highlight the reality of collegiate athletes' lives after sports. On Thursday evening at Edberg-Olson Hall, current members of the Temple football team attended the first Temple Football PROfessional Day with 10 former Owl football student-athletes who are leaders in their respective fields.
The evening featured panel discussions with professional leaders from business, industry, education, entertainment, and law enforcement who shared their stories, advice, pitfalls, and passions.
“The purpose of last night's event was to provide a forum for our current football players to network and engage in conversations with former Temple football players about careers other than football,” said Sherryta Freeman, Senior Associate Athletic Director of Compliance & Student-Athlete Affairs. “The former players provided insight into the importance of goal-setting and having academic focus. They also encouraged the team to use the sense of hard work and the drive they have in football towards anything they want to be successful in during their lives. It was very powerful evening and, we plan to have this as an annual event.”
Alumni included Apple's Peter Bernard (1986-88), construction/real estate investor Shawn Bullard (2002-03), marketing rep Josh Bundy (2004-07), former NFL player & current businessman Raheem Brock (1998-01), education administrator Chris Chambers (1986-88), businessman Terrell Chanell (2006), filmmaker Lamar McPherson (2007-09), educator Sheldon Morris (1984-87), New Jersey state detective Peppi Pichette (1996-99), and Temple police office Koran Taylor (1988-89).
“I think it was a good experience for the younger players because they got a real idea of what to expect and what their futures might hold,” said senior TE Alex Jackson “It made me think about my academic career at Temple and the dilemma I had about what major to select. I related well to the message they delivered.”
Round table discussions for juniors and seniors featured entertainment/film/music, business/sales, and law enforcement.
“It was epic! I was so energized by the opportunity to be in front of those guys,” Bullard said. “It was powerful and you could see it in their eyes that they were interested in what we had to say.”
The freshman and sophomore classes heard from motivational speakers Bundy, Chambers, and Morris.
