Women's Soccer Improves to 3-0 with a 1-0 Victory Over Mount St. Mary's

8.30.13 | Women's Soccer

EMMITSBURG, Md. – Temple women's soccer extended their season opening winning streak to three games with a 1-0 victory over Mount St. Mary's on Thursday night. Alyssa Kirk scored the only goal in the game to win it for the Owls.

"Starting the season out with four games on the road with a young squad in only the first week of school, our coaching staff was worried how the ladies would respond," Head Coach Seamus O'Connor said. "They really impressed us by proving our doubts to be wrong. I can't say it enough how impressed I am with how this team has played with maturity."

Junior Alyssa Kirk scored with less than three minutes left in the first half. After receiving a pass from Brendi Ernst through the offensive zone, Kirk's shot was deflected and went it for her second goal of the season. She scored in the previous game against Delaware State.

"Mount St. Mary's really gave us a tough battle," O'Connor said. "We really had to earn this win. This wasn't a game we could afford to make mistakes because we knew it could cost us against a good team."

Goalie Shauni Kerkhoff once again recorded a shutout to earn the win. She has led the Owls in preventing a single goal scored by their opponents this season. Kerkhoff made three saves in this game on eight shots from Mount St. Mary's.

"Shauni has done everything asked of her," O'Connor said. "Her play has been flawless for us so far. However, our defensive unit is just as responsible for the great defensive play. Our players are still learning as they progress this season, but they have made sound decisions that have allowed us to record three shutouts this season. I'm very proud of what they have done, and there is still room for progress."

The Owls will look to start a season 4-0 for the first time ever in their program's history on Sunday, when they play at Loyola University in Baltimore, Md. The Greyhounds are 1-0 after winning at Towson in their season opening game.
