Women's Soccer Wins in Double Overtime 1-0 over Loyola Maryland to Continue Best Start in Program History

9.1.13 | Women's Soccer

BALTIMORE, Md. - The Temple women's soccer team won 1-0 in double overtime over Loyola Maryland on Sunday afternoon at Ridley Athletic Complex.  The win pushes the Owls' record to 4-0, the best start in program history.

"It was a very tough win for us against a good team in Loyola Maryland," head coach Seamus O'Connor said. "When it went into overtime, I could tell that we were going to win.  We were aggressive, controlling the ball, and it eventually led to the game-winning goal for us.  I'm extremely proud of what my players have been able to do, winning four games on the road to start the season.  It can't be stated enough how proud I am."

Captain Erin Lafferty scored her first goal of the season five minutes into the second overtime to win the game for the Owls.  She scored on a free kick just outside the left side of the box and shot it in below the top right post.  Lafferty's goal can be seen by clicking on the link below.

"Erin's goal was just tremendous," O'Connor said.  "She put it top shelf, and the goalie had no chance.  Erin made a great play to win the game for us."

Goalie Shauni Kerkhoff picked up another shutout in the season to improve her record to 4-0.  On Loyola's eight total shots, Kerkhoff made two saves.  She hasn't allowed a goal in the 375 minutes she's played this season in goal.

In the last play, the Owls suffered a serious injury as freshman defenseman Morgan Elliott broke her leg.  Elliott started all four games to start her college career with Temple.

"The team's thoughts are with Morgan right now," O'Connor said. "It's very hard to balance the emotions of winning a game in overtime and seeing a player go down with an injury like that.  Everyone on this team is hoping for the best right now with Morgan."

After starting the season with four games away, the Owls return to Ambler Soccer Field to play their home opener on Friday, Sept. 6 against Marshall at 1:30 p.m.  Marshall's record to begin the 2013 season is 2-1-1.
