Marc Williams, CEO of Williams Communications, stood in front of all student athletes Sunday evening (Sept. 8) in McGonigle Hall to kick off the speaker series, Owls Striving for Excellence. The Owls will be given the opportunity to talk with Williams and his associates throughout the 2013-14 year. Williams hopes to find a way to empower student athletes as professionals with confidence.
In his introductory talk, Williams explained his story, including his connections with Temple University, the adversity he faced in education through the years, and how he achieved the high rank he holds today. He put strong emphasis on student-athletes valuing each other because of the opportunities it could present. Simply networking within the student-athlete family could develop future relationships, in particular on a business level.
Williams also drove home the importance of having a high level of confidence while networking. Through his own personal accounts he explained that confidence can often take you farther than a 4.0 GPA.
In regards to maintaining happiness once your career has begun, Williams put it simply. He explained that money is not what breeds the happiness. When he was unhappy with the nature of his career, despite the bountiful pay, he chose to leave and pursue what he knew would satisfy his soul.
After considering all of Mr. Williams' points, the underlying message that he expressed to student-athletes is persistence. Although we all face adversity and obstacles, none of those challenges are an excuse to stop going after what you truly want. Proclaiming himself as "The 1.6 GPA guy," Marc Williams is out to empower the Owls to aim higher than they ever have before despite their biggest struggles.
