PHILADELPHIA (The Palestra) - Temple volleyball won its first match of the Penn Invitational over Weber State by a score of 3-1, defeating the Wildcats by scores of 25-14, 25-11, 23-25, and 25-19.
Gabriella Matautia led the Owls with 12 kills and nine digs, narrowly missing out on a double-double. Sandra Sydlik led the way with 30 assists.
"It's good to start off the tournament with a win," Temple head coach Bakeer Ganes said. "I thought we did a really good job in the first two sets even though we lost our focus a little bit in the third set."
As Ganes mentioned, the Owls took care of business in the first two sets with only three lead changes between the two. The Owls recorded 11 kills to only three errors in the first set. Â Temple rebounded from a sloppy third set in which they had 13 errors by winning the fourth set with 14 kills.
With the victory, the Owls move to 6-1 on the season, and won their sixth straight match.
Temple will play two matches on Sunday at the Penn Invitational, the first against La Salle at 10:00 a.m. and the second against the host, Penn, at 2:00 p.m.
