News & Notes Following Temple's 30-29 loss vs. Fordham
The Owls had four players score TDs: QB Juice Granger, QB Connor Reilly, RB Kenneth Harper, and H-Back Chris Coyer…Harper scored his 4th TD of the season and has at least one in every game. Reilly scored his first career TD and also threw his first TD pass. His TD strike to Coyer was the Owls first TD pass of the season.
Harper recorded his first career 100-yard rushing game (16-105-1TD).
Reilly who had been nursing a knee injury and practiced just once this week was called into action with 6:14 remaining in the 3rd Q. He proceeded to lead TU to three TDs in three drives. In just over one quarter (with 4:29 left on the clock), he engineered a comeback from down 20-7 to a 29-23 Temple lead. However, after Fordham took a 30-29 lead with 0:04 left, there was no more time for comebacks. Overall, he was 7 of 8 passing for 69 yards and 4-33-1TD rushing.
The Temple defense once again held strong within the 10 yard line (coming off a game where Temple held Houston out of the end zone in 6 such possessions). In two possessions inside the 10, Fordham lost the ball on downs and was forced to kick a FG. Overall the Rams ran 9 plays for -4 yards while inside the 10 (4, -2, 5, 1, -3, -3, -2, 0, -4). Counting the final drive at Notre Dame, that's 9 straight possessions without yielding a TD on plays from inside the 10 (28 plays for 16 yards, including 17 plays of 0 or negative yards).
Granger started at QB for the injured Reilly but was relieved by true freshman P.J. Walker coming out at halftime. At one point the Owls had 3 true freshmen on the field for the offense – Walker, RT Dion Dawkins and RB Zaire Williams. Ironically, they were on the field with 4 players who already earned their degrees – Coyer, LT Cody Booth, RG Pete White, WR Ryan Alderman.
Sean Boyle started at RT. A 6th year medical senior, Boyle was making his first start this season and first since 10/27/12 at Pitt.
Chris Coyer made his first career start at a position other than QB. The senior with 13 career starts at QB is making the transition to TE/HB. He became the third different starting TE in three games.
Jim Cooper and Nick Visco each scored their first career points. Cooper made the Owls first PAT but a missed 23-yard FG opened the door for Visco. Visco made both his PAT attempts.
WLB Tyler Matakevich led all players with 14 tackles. He had two tackles for loss including a -3 yard stop on 4th-and 1 on the Rams first possession.
