AMBLER, PA – Freshman Matt Mahoney took a pass from junior Willie Chalfont in the box and finished it for his first collegiate goal to lead Temple men's soccer to a 1-0 win over Fordham Wednesday in a non-conference match at the Ambler Soccer Field. The Owls improved to 6-2 on the season while the Rams fell to 2-5.
Mahoney's goal came in the 76th minute to break a scoreless tie in the match against former Atlantic 10 Conference rivals. Temple will open play in its new league, the American Athletic Conference, Saturday at 18th-ranked Louisville.
Temple's defense was again stellar, posting its sixth shutout of the season behind the play of junior goalkeeper Dan Scheck (0.37 gaa., .909 save percentage). Sheck made three in the contest and was aided by the play of backs, seniors Nolan and Sawyer Hemmer, and freshmen Stefan Mueller and Robert Sagel.
"It is not only Dan, but the four guys in front of him, and the six other guys (on the field)," said Temple head coach Dave MacWilliams. "We have made it a point since day one of preseason camp that if you are going to be on the field you are going to have to be able to defend.
Temple out-shot Fordham, 12-10, with Ram goalkeeper Alex Naples making five saves.
