Going back to the basics. Coach Matt Rhule has used the teams' bye week to instill the values of effort and physicality for their upcoming game against Idaho (0-4) on Saturday at the Kibbie Dome.

Rhule admitted that, "it felt like training camp all over again," as his players had the opportunity to reflect on their 0-3 start and focus on their identity for the Owls' next stretch of games.

"It let us take a step back and see how we've been playing," said coach Rhule on the teams extra time off. "When you're in game mode sometimes you don't get a chance to do that. With the off week we really could go back and focus on effort and being physical because we didn't feel like in the past two games we were able to do that to our liking.
We've really gone back and re-established who we want to be and hopefully that shows through on Saturday."

The Owls most recently lost to Fordham, 30-29, after allowing a heartbreaking touchdown in the waning seconds of the game to deny themselves their first win of the season.

Despite the loss, junior QB Connor Reilly impressed. With the Owls trailing 20-7 late in the third quarter, Reilly rallied the Owls back finishing 7 of 8 for 69 yards and a touchdown through the air, while adding 20 yards and a touchdown on the ground.

"For the first three games especially with the injury he's been dealing with he's shown that he's a leader and he's got all the intangibles that we're looking for," said coach Rhule. "With each week I think we're going to see him play better and better."

Reilly came up gingerly on a play late in the fourth quarter against Houston which forced him to wear a knee brace against Fordham as well as in practice. Coaches and teammates have been inspired by his grit and competitiveness.

"He's a lion on the field," said coach Rhule. "All his teammates respect him and want to watch him play. Everyone's fully behind him."

Now fully rested and focused, the Owls have set their sights on the first win of the season. The Vandals are led by freshman QB Chad Chalich and senior RB James Baker. The Owls defense looks to key in on the two Saturday and give their offense a chance to provide some scoring against an Idaho defense which surrenders 42.3 points a game.

"I try to be the same guy every day regardless of what happens," said coach Rhule on the search for the potential for the teams' first win. "After every game win, lose or draw I'm always going to go back and examine what things we didn't do well and figure out what we can do better. To me that's the only way you can build an elite program.

"To build an elite program you have to set the standard high and only relax when you reach that standard of play."

The Owls kickoff at 5 p.m. on Saturday. The game will be aired on 97.5 FM The Fanatic.
