PHILADELPHIA – Senior All-America catcher Stephanie Pasquale (Pompton Lakes, N.J./Pompton Lakes) has been selected to the "Watch List" for the 2014 USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year, the Amateur Softball Association (ASA) and USA Softball announced yesterday. Now in its 13th year, the USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year award, given by the National Governing Body for softball in the United States, is designed to recognize outstanding athletic achievement by female collegiate softball players across the country.
Pasquale put together one of the most outstanding individual seasons in Temple softball history last year, becoming the first TU softball player to earn All-America honors with her selection to the 2013 NFCA Division I Third-Team.
In 2013, Pasquale became just the third Temple player in school history to earn the Atlantic 10 Player of the Year honor. Also a first-team all-conference and all-championship selection, she led the squad and the conference with a .465 overall average, hitting .552 in conference play. She set a Temple and Atlantic 10 single-season record for RBI with 80, and finished the season first in the country with 1.38 per game. The junior was also the toughest player in the nation to strikeout, doing so only three times in 187 at bats. Early in the season, she put together a 21-game hit streak and ended the year reaching base safely in the final 16 contests. Her record-setting campaign also included TU single-season marks for doubles (21), batting average (.465) and home runs (15).
The Cherry & White finished the year at 32-26, setting a school record for wins in a season.
Previous recipients of the USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year award, the most prestigious individual honor in NCAA Division I Softball, are UCLA catcher Stacey Nuveman (2002), Texas pitcher Cat Osterman (2003, 2005 and 2006), Florida State pitcher Jessica Van der Linden (2004), Tennessee pitcher Monica Abbott (2007), Virginia Tech pitcher Angela Tincher (2008), Washington pitcher Danielle Lawrie (2009 and 2010), Stanford shortstop Ashley Hansen (2011) and Oklahoma's Keilani Ricketts (2012 and 2013).
The pre-season "Watch List" includes three other players from The American Athletic Conference, Temple's league. Katie Keller (infield) of Louisville, Sara Nevins (pitcher) of South Florida and Houston's Haley Outon (catcher) also represent the first-year conference.
The Top 25 Finalists for the 2014 USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year award will be announced April 9. While an athlete does not have to be on the "Watch List" to be considered for the Top 25, the eventual USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year will come from the Top 25 Finalists. The Top 10 Finalists will be announced May 7 and the Top 3 Finalists will be announced May 21. On May 27 prior to the start of the 2014 NCAA Women's College World Series (WCWS) in Oklahoma City, the 2014 USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year will be revealed.
