PHILADELPHIA - Weather conditions seem to be topical when Temple plays the Tulsa Golden Hurricane. Similar to the last time the teams met in 1988, the day was met with rain. The forecast improved for Temple, however, after a 35-24 win at Lincoln Financial Field in front of a Homecoming crowd of 25,340. The Owls are now 4-1 for just the fifth time in the Modern Era (since 1971).
Temple went into the game looking to improve the way the offfense has started in recent games and seemed to do just that. On the opening drive of the game, Temple scored on a three play, 79 yard drive, sparked by a 68-yard run by RB Jahad Thomas down the sideline. From the Tulsa eight-yard line, RB Kenneth Harper marched into the end zone for the first Temple score.
After a sack of QB P.J. Walker and a partially blocked punt, Tulsa was able to tie things up at 7-7 on a three-play, 52-yard drive that took 58 seconds to complete. It was Tulsa's first score in the first quarter all season.
On the kickoff, Thomas fumbled the ball with Tulsa recovering it on the 31-yard line. However, the Golden Hurricane could not capitalize on the turnover, after a facemask call and sack of QB Dane Evans by DL Praise Martin-Oguike.
Walker was able to launch a 37-yard pass to WR Jalen Fitzpatrick as well as a 21-yard pass to Harper to get down to the Tulsa five-yard line. After an incomplete pass to WR Romond DeLoatch in the back of the end zone the Owls brought their field goal unit out. Instead of three, the Owls faked the kick and collected a touchdown after QB Connor Reilly rushed for three yards.
To continue the battle, Tulsa had its own nine-play, 62-yard scoring play to tie the game up 14-14. Evans hit Mendel Dixon, Jr. with a nine-yard pass to even up the score.
On the ensuing possession, Walker tossed an interception, giving Tulsa good field position at the Temple 39-yard line. After getting to the Owls 29-yard line, Tulsa RB Zack Langer was tackled by Martin-Oguike to force a Golden Hurricane field goal. However, Carl Salazar's kick hit the right upright.
Late in the second quarter, the Owls came up big on a 4th and 1 stop at the Tulsa one-yard line, after LBs Nate D. Smith and Tyler Matakevich were able to stuff Langer at the goal line.
From the end zone, Walker was able to launch a 64-yard pass from the Temple 18-yard line to RB Jaime Gilmore. Walker then launched another pass to Fitzpatrick for 13 yards, which then set up a five-yard run by Walker for the third Temple touchdown.
In the first half alone, Matakevich had 12 tackles, eight of which were solo tackles. He finished the game with 14 tackles, 10 solo, two tackles for a loss, and one broken up pass.
To start the second half, the Golden Hurricane marched down the field for 76-yards, capped off by a 29-yard touchdown pass from Evans to WR Keevan Lucas. Coming into this game, Lucas averaged 108 yards on 8.8 receptions per game. He had nine catches for 109 yards and one touchdown. This was Lucas' third 100-yard game of the season and of his career.
In his 12th start, Walker completed 15-of-31 passes for 294 yards, one interception and two touchdowns. Walker hit Fitzpatrick and Thomas for the scores, on 30 yards and 20 yards, respectively. Walker has now thrown a touchdown pass in 13 consecutive games and has thrown for over 200 yards in 11 of his12 career starts and four of five games this season.
RB Jamie Gilmore recorded his first 100-yard receiving game on two passes from Walker, including a season-long 64-yard toss in the second quarter. Fitzpatrick has his second 100-yard receiving game of the season, collecting 107 yards on five catches.
Thomas, who played on special teams last year for the Owls', collected his first 100-yard rushing game on 14 carries for 156 yards. This was the first 100-yard rushing game for an Owl since last year's loss to Fordham, where Kenneth Harper rushed for 105 yards.
CB Alex Wells saw his first game action since hurting his knee in week 1 at Vanderbilt, where he was the Owls' second-leading tackler with eight tackles, eight solo and one broken up pass.
K Austin Jones continued his streak of consecutive PATs, successfully making 5-5 to raise his total to 23-23 on the season. In the fourth quarter, Jones missed the Owls' only field goal attempt on the day from 37-yards.
The Owls next take on the Houston Cougars in a nationally-televised game on Friday, October 17. The game will be broadcast on ESPNU at 9 pm.
