Women's Soccer Wins Overtime Thriller

AMBLER, Pa. – Temple women's soccer defeated Tulsa 3-2 Thursday afternoon in its conference home opener at Ambler Sports Complex. Temple improves to 9-3-0 and 2-1-0 in the conference while Tulsa drops to 7-5-1 and 1-2-0 in the conference. Temple has not won 9 games in a season since the 1995 team (9-6-2).
The first half was an even match. The teams came out aggressively however neither could find the net as the half ended scoreless at 0-0. The half ended with Temple outshooting Tulsa 4-2.
The second half was quite the contrary.Temple started off the scoring when they were awarded a free kick at the 60:55 minute mark. Erin Lafferty took the kick for the Owls and sent it by the goalkeeper. Tulsa answered shortly after as Rachel Thun took a shot at the top of the 18. Then at the 68:39 minute mark Kelly Farrell juked by defenders and blasted a shot at the top of the 18 and put the Owls up 2-1. The assist was credited to Elana Falcone. Tulsa would not go down without a fight and at the 81:44 minute mark Christina Holmes headed one in past the goalkeeper. The half ended tied at 2-2.
The first overtime period Temple came out aggressive and with 1:21 left to play in overtime, Temple had a throw in on Tulsa's half of the field. Taylor Trusky received the throw in and was able to find Kayla Cunningham at the far post and Cunningham put it away to end the game. The Owls finished the game outshooting the Golden Hurricanes 15-10. Shauni Kerkhoff registered five saves in the game.
Temple will close out the weekend at home this Sunday when they take on Memphis. The game is scheduled for a 1:00pm start at Ambler Sports Complex in Ambler, Pa.
