AMBLER, Pa. – Temple women's soccer tied Memphis 1-1 Sunday afternoon. Temple stands now 9-3-1 and 2-1-1 in the conference while Memphis stands at 4-5-4 and 1-1-2 in the conference. Temple finished out the week 1-0-1 in conference play, while collecting four conference points (3 points for a win, 1 for a draw, 0 for a loss).
The first half was an exciting even match. The teams came out aggressively and Memphis was rewarded at the 10:20 minute mark as Valerie Sanderson hit from the top of the 18 to plant the ball on the far left post. Temple responded soon after at the 12:06 minute mark after Taylor Trusky received a throw in and sent a long pass to Kelly Farrell who headed the ball past the keeper. The half ended 1-1 with Temple outshooting Memphis 4-3.
The second half was a battle. Memphis came out very aggressively but the Owls defense held strong. Regulation ended with a tie at 1-1, which pushed the game into overtime. Memphis outshot Temple 6-1 in the second half.
Overtime was again great competition as both teams tried to find the net. Temple was able to outshoot Memphis 4-2 in both overtime periods; however they could not find the net. The game ended in a 1-1 draw.
"Very pleased with 4 points at the end of the weekend," said head coach Seamus O'Connor. "We were kind of behind with injuries on Thursday and to then get another injury today was just scary and was a little speechless today on the sidelines with how the girls responded. They are such a good team, and are so close to another. Today was really about defense, I was really impressed with the defending. The back four defenders and Shauni just came up with big plays for us today, and I just couldn't be more pleased with them."
Kelly Farrell's goal today was her 7th on the season. Farrell currently leads the team with 16 points and 16 shots on goal.
Shauni Kerkhoff added 5 saves to her resume today. Kerkhoff has 59 saves for the season with 4 shutouts while also boasting a 0.98 goals against average and a .819 save percentage. Kerkhoff currently ranks 5th all-time in saves at Temple with 217.
The Owls will be back in action Thursday, Oct. 9th as they go on the road to SMU. The game is scheduled for an 8:00 p.m. start.
