11.6.14 | Women's Soccer
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Temple women's soccer players Kelly Farrell, Shauni Kerkhoff and Kayla Cunningham were honored this week by the American Athletic Conference for their individual efforts this season. Farrell and Kerkhoff were both selected to the 2nd All-Conference team. Cunningham was selected to the All-Rookie team.
Farrell led the Owls in points with 20. She also led the Owls in goals (nine), shots on goal (22), and shots on goal percentage (.629). Farrell also added two assists to her resume this season. She made the American Conference weekly honor roll twice on Sept. 15 and Oct. 6 for her outstanding play.
Kerkhoff ended the season boasting a 1.13 goals against average, .775 save percentage, six shutouts, along with recording 79 saves on the season. Kerkhoff is first all-time at Temple in save percentage (.806), goals against average (1.15), and shutouts (17). Kerkhoff also ranks fifth all-time in saves with 237. Kerkhoff twice was the recipient of American Conference goalkeeper of the week on Sept. 1st and Sept. 8th. She also received American Conference weekly honor roll on Sept. 15th.
Cunningham played Division 1 field hockey at Indiana University prior to joining the Owls. In her first season Cunningham finished third in points with nine, adding four goals (tied for second), and one assist. Cunningham led the Owls in shots with 52.
"Kelly is a go-to player," said head coach Seamus O'Connor. "Kelly easily could have been first team. She was the player teams built game plans for. Her work rate is phenomenal and helped us score so many goals. She put a lot of pressure up front for us, and deserved recognition for what she did. I am very happy for her; she improved so much from last year."
"A great honor for Shauni and our defense," said O'Connor. "Whenever a goalkeeper is recognized it shows the work of the defense as well. She had some big saves for us at key moments. She kept us in a lot of games this season."
"Very impressed with Kayla," said O'Connor. "This was her first year back playing soccer after playing division 1 field hockey last year. She was a threat and worked really hard for us. She did whatever was asked of her and that's always a coach's dream."
