Men's Soccer Faces UConn in Conference Tournament

PHILADELPHIA – Temple men's soccer heads to UConn on Saturday at 7:00 p.m in the quarterfinals of the American Athletic Conference Tournament.  The #8 seed Owls will face the #1 seed and regular season conference champion Huskies for the second time this season.  With a win, Temple would return back to Storrs, Conn. for the semifinals of the tournament as UConn is the host site of the semifinals and finals of the conference tournament this year.

Headlines
  • Temple (#8 seed) faces UConn (#1 seed) in the quarterfinals of the American Athletic Conference Tournament. The winner advances to the semifinals to face the winner of #4 USF/ #5 Memphis.
  • Temple is 2-13-2, 1-6-1 with the 2014 regular season ending last Saturday. The Owls finished the season in eighth place in the American Athletic Conference.
  • The semifinals (November 14th, 5:30/ 8:00 p.m.) and finals (November 16th, 12:00 p.m.) will be held at UConn at Joseph J. Morrone Stadium in Storrs, Conn.
  • 12 underclassmen have started a game for Temple. 17 total underclassmen have appeared in a game.
  • Five freshmen have started at least eight games for the Owls: midfielder Felipe Liborio (16 games), midfielder Miguel Polley (15), defender Mark Grasela (12), midfielder Brendon Creed
  • (eight), and forward Olli Tynkkynen (12).
  • Senior goalkeeper Dan Scheck is currently third in career goals allowed average (1.03) behind Jeff Kraft's (1977-80) and Tony Pratico (2004-07), ninth in career saves (198) and fourth in career wins (16). Senior Bobby Rosato is tied for sixth place in all-time wins with 14.
  • Sophomore defender Robert Sagel has played all 1,622 minutes of the season. Sophomore defender Matt Mahoney is second in minutes played with 1,547.
  • Junior forward/midfielder Jared Martinelli is tied for sixth in career assists with 19. Martinelli has four assists this season, tops on the team.
  • Sagel, Scheck and Martinelli were selected to the Preseason All-American Athletic Conference Team. Scheck was voted by the coaches as the Preseason Goalkeeper of the Year.
  • Sophomore defender Stefan Mueller scored his first collegiate goal in the last match against UConn that tied the score up in the second half.
  • R.V. UConn comes into the game with a record of 9-6-2, 6-1-1. The Huskies ended the regular season on a five game-winning streak and didn't lose a conference game after their opener against USF to become the regular season conference champions for the second year in a row.
  • The Huskies were unanimously picked to finish first in the preseason conference coaches' poll.
  • Sophomore forward Cyle Larin leads the team with eight goals and 19 points. Larin was tabbed the conference rookie of the year last season and selected to this year's MAC Hermann Watch List and the preseason all-conference team as an unanimous pick.
  • Senior defenseman Sergio Campbell was selected as the preseason defensive player of the year and has started all 17 games.
  • Senior midfielder Adria Beso Marco was also named to the MAC Hermann Watch List and has contributed three goals.
  • Redshirt-junior Jacob Wagmeister and redshirt-freshman Scott Levene have shared the duties in goal. Wagmeister started the first eight games and has a 1.69 goals allowed average and .725 save percentage. Levene has started the last nine games, pitching shutouts in six of the games with 26 saves.
