Temple University Teams with Mayor Nutter To Honor High School Students

PHILADELPHIA – Mayor Michael A. Nutter presented 220 Philadelphia students with tickets to tonight's Temple University Men's and Women's basketball games as part of the Mayor's Very Impressive Performers (VIPs) Program, which provides sporting and entertainment event tickets to students to inspire their success in school.
The VIP event was hosted by Temple University in the Fox Gittis Room of the Liacouras Center. Temple University senior associate athletic director Sherryta Freeman and senior football player Anthony Robey welcomed the high school students in attendance and talked about the importance of education and working hard in the classroom before Mayor Nutter addressed the audience.
For this quarter, the Mayor's VIPs program awarded tickets to 9th grade students from District, charter, private and Archdiocese schools who had perfect attendance for September and October. In total, more than 2,000 students qualified for VIPs perfect attendance award. Of that, 220 students were selected through a random drawing. Across the City, 47 schools participated in the VIPs program for this quarter.
"I am proud to recognize the dedicated students who had perfect attendance for the months of September and October. Perfect attendance is a critical first step for students to be active and engaged in their education and studies show that students who have high attendance rates are more likely to graduate high school and attend college," said Mayor Nutter. "I want to thank Temple University for their generous support of the Mayor's VIPs program and these tremendous young people. Once again, congratulations to our newest VIPs and keep up the good work."
Students received free admission to the Temple Women's and Men's basketball games Wednesday evening.
"Each of these students has shown a commitment to their education by their perfect attendance. Now is the time to make one more commitment: I urge each of these students to continue their high achievement in high school and start planning for college now," said Temple University President Neil D. Theobald.
This is the first VIPs ceremony for the 2014-2015 school year. Since the VIPs program's inception in 2008, 11,104 have been distributed to students.
