Men's Basketball Travels To St. Joe's For Big 5 Battle

12.2.14 | Men's Basketball

PHILADELPHIA - It is Big 5 Week for the Temple men's basketball team as the Owls travel to Saint Joseph's Wednesday (6:30 p.m./CBS Sports Network/1210 AM WPHT) before taking on La Salle at The Palestra Saturday (Noon/ESPNU/1210 AM WPHT).

Off to a 4-2 start (1-0 in Big 5 play), the Owls will be in search of their first win away from the Liacouras Center when they take on the Hawks at Hagan Arena.  It will be the 157th meeting in the series - the most games played against any opponent - with Temple owning an 89-67 advantage.  SJU, however, has a 7-4 record when playing Temple on its campus.  The Owls have lost three straight at SJU, with the last win there coming on Feb, 9, 1999.

Senior guard Will Cummings leads Temple in scoring (15.2 ppg,) and assists (3.3 rpg.) and is second in rebounding (7.2 rpg.), 0.1 rpg. behind junior forward Jaylen Bond. Cummings is looking to become the first guard to lead Temple in scoring, rebounding and assists since Mardy Collins accomplished the feat in 2004-05.

Bond, who missed the first two games of the season due to an ankle injury, tops the team with a 7.3 rebound average.  He is coming off a career-high 13 rebound game against LIU Brooklyn.

After scoring just two points in the season-opener against American, junior guard Quenton DeCosey has tallied double figures in five straight games, averaging 14.0 ppg. over that stretch.

Temple's defense, which allowed 78.1 ppg. last season, is holding opponents to just 61.0 ppg., good for 4th best in The American.  TU foes are also shooting a mere 38.2% from the field (4th) and are tied for first in the league in defending the three-point shot (21.1%).

Saint Joseph's, the defending Atlantic 10 Conference champions, enters play with a 3-3 mark following a 62-59 loss to Western Kentucky at Madison Square Garden on Thanksgiving,  The Hawks lost three starters from last year's 24-win squad to graduation, but return sophomore forward DeAndre' Bembry, a preseason first team all-conference pick.

Bembry leads SJU in scoring (14.7 ppg.), rebounds (6.8 rpg,) and assists (3.2 apg.). Senior guard Chris Wilson (6.2 ppg.) is the Hawks' other returning starter, while junior transfer Aaron Brown (11.2 ppg.) comes off the bench to provide an offensive spark.

Temple has won 11 of the last 13 meetings in the series, but St. Joe's has won two of the last three.
