Lacrosse Defeated by Cornell in First Road Game of the Season
2.23.14 | Women's Lacrosse
ITHACA, N.Y. - Cornell used a big run in the latter part of the first half to put the game out of reach for Temple lacrosse in what was ultimately a 17-9 win for the Big Red (1-0). The Owls (1-2) helped their cause with five straight goals in the second half, but the deficit was too much to overcome.
Jaymie Tabor recorded her first hat trick of the season, scoring all three of her goals in Temple's second-half run. Nicole Tiernan and Rachel Schwaab put up two goals, with Schwaab scoring back-to-back in opening eight minutes of the contest.
Schwaab's goals gave Temple a 2-1 lead with just over seven minutes elapsed, but it would be the Owls' only lead of the game. The Big Red answered with a pair of scores for a 3-2 lead, and Temple's Nicole Tiernan tied the game up on a free position shot with 16:38 to go in the first half.
From there, it was all Cornell as the Big Red closed the half with nine goals, and then opened the second half with two more for their largest lead of 14-3.Â
Temple's scoring drought ended with a goal from Tabor six and a half minutes into the second half, and she scored three times in a 5-0 run that also included goals by Anna Frederick and Megan Tiernan. The third of Tabor's goals put Temple within six, 14-8 with 8:08 remaining, but Cornell's Rachel Moody tipped the momentum back to her team with her fifth goal of the game and the first goal in a 3-0 run.
After Cornell's Catherine Ellis scored twice, Nicole Tiernan put one in the net in the last 10 seconds for the final tally of 17-9.
The Owls will be back in action at home next Saturday, March 1, to face Oregon at 1:00 p.m.Â
