Tabor Named to BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll
Senior Jaymie Tabor was named to the BIG EAST Lacrosse Weekly Honor Roll for her performances the week of Feb. 17-23. Cincinnati's Megan Bell was named the Offensive Player of the Week, while Rutgers' Amanda Currell was named the Defensive Player of the Week. After sitting out game one for Temple due to injury, Tabor made a big impact in the Owls' other two games in their first week of the 2014 season. She scored two of Temple's four goals against La Salle, and then recorded a hat trick at Cornell, scoring three of the Owls' nine goals for a total of five on the week. Tabor recorded three draw controls at Cornell as well as a ground ball.
Owls Looking to Get Back on the Winning Track Before Colorado Trip
Temple started its season with an 11-7 win vs. Saint Joseph's on Feb. 18, a game that had been rescheduled from Feb. 15 due to snow. The Owls had to turn right around and play La Salle 24 hours later, and suffered a 7-4 loss to the Explorers. In Temple's first road game of the year on Feb. 23, the Owls dropped a 17-9 decision to Cornell. Temple is a young team, with just eight upperclassmen and 20 sophomores and freshmen. Head coach Bonnie Rosen has been giving her two goalkeepers equal time in the cage so far- redshirt sophomore Jaqi Kakalecik and junior Rachel Hall.
"If you look at the stats, we lost our leading scorers," said Rosen, "but that isn't to say we lost our scoring power. Our younger players have to be willing to step in and make that scoring impact. I think we'll be a much more well-rounded offense this year. We have a lot of scoring threats in the midfield and attack. Rachel Schwaab had an outstanding freshman year and shows a real knack for being able to organize and attack and see things. In terms of physical ability to get to goal, we have a lot of different options. I think the difference from last year will be that we played to our experience to try to win games, and this year it's going to take a true team effort to take advantage of everyone's talents."
After the home game on March 1, Temple will be heading west to Colorado for Spring Break. The Owls will play at Colorado on March 4, and spend another few days training before a March 8 game at Denver. "It's exciting," said Rosen. "I find it's a great experience and it's easier to focus when you're on the road than when you're at home. I love that we'll be going to some new places. When things are unfamiliar, you have to learn how to deal with that."
Temple Begins First Season as an Associate Member of the BIG EAST Conference
As the Owls adjust to their new look on the field, they will also be preparing to face a lineup of new opponents that include preseason BIG EAST favorite and #10 Georgetown. The rest of the BIG EAST slate includes fellow associate members UConn, Rutgers and Louisville along with Villanova, Cincinnati and Marquette. Both Rutgers and Louisville will leave after the 2014 season. "It's really exciting to be a part of a new conference," says Rosen. "We don't get to the BIG EAST games for awhile, but it's certainly on our mind in preparations. We're going to come up against new styles. The fun part for us is that we're the unknown. Everyone else has played each other."Â Georgetown will serve as the host of the BIG EAST Championships, set for Thursday and Saturday, May 1 and 3.
