Women's Tennis Picks Up Shutout Win Over Drexel, 7-0

PHILADELPHIA – The Temple women's tennis team picked up its first win of the 2014 season, defeating cross-city rival Drexel, 7-0, on Wednesday, February 5. The Owls defeated the Dragons at the Legacy Youth Tennis and Education Center.
TU earned the doubles point with wins at the first and third flights. Rebecca Breland and Dina Karina got the match started with their 6-3 win at No. 1. Alicia Doms and Minami Okajima secured the point with a 7-5 decision at the third flight.
In singles action, four of the Cherry & White victories came in straight sets. Doms was a 6-0, 6-4 winner at No. 1, while Jordan Batey picked up a 6-3, 6-0 decision at No. 3. Anais Nussaume fought for a 7-6(5), 6-3, win at the fourth flight, while Karina was a 7-6(1), 6-4 victor at the sixth flight.
It took Mavrina three sets to get the point at No. 2. The captain dropped the first, 7-5, but rebounded to win the final two sets 6-1, 10-1. Okajima also dropped her opening set at the fifth flight, 6-1, but bounced back with 6-3 and 10-8 second and third sets, respectively, to keep the shutout in tact.
"It was a great team effort today," said head coach Steve Mauro. "This was a nice rebound from our season-opening loss (at Princeton) and we are headed back in the right direction. I was very happy with the team chemistry today."
The Owls return to action on Sunday, February 9, with a 7:30 a.m. match against St. Francis (N.Y.).
