PHILADELPHIA - Visiting Delaware surged ahead early in the game and kept its lead throughout, defeating Temple lacrosse 16-9 at Geasey Field on Saturday afternoon. The Owls (2-5) matched the Blue Hens (5-3) goal-for-goal over the final 40 minutes, but were already in too deep of a hole.

Freshman Carly Demato recorded her first career hat trick to lead Temple, finishing the game with seven points after also recording an assist. Six other players also scored for the Owls, including sophomore Kara Stroup who notched her first career goal with four minutes remaining.

"We get out of the gate very slow," said Temple head coach Bonnie Rosen. "We keep getting ourselves down a whole bunch of goals, not always the same way, but we keep doing it. A lot of that is we're not taking the right opportunities for our shots. So we're turning the ball over early on. Then draw controls become a problem and we get a breakdown defensively. We've got to learn how to execute our offense well from the beginning, and that will be our push in practice."

Delaware's Caitlin McCartney, who finished the game with five goals, scored three of those in an 8-1 run over the first 14 minutes for the Blue Hens.

The Owls' Molly Seefried was in the right spot to score off a rebounded save in the fourth minute of action, but it would be Temple's only goal in nearly the first 20 minutes. With the Owls down a player, Kelly Syphard converted on a free-position shot with 10:36 remaining to end the drought.

McCartney and teammate Chelsea Fay then answered with a pair of goals that were both assisted by Casey Lyons to give Delaware a 10-2 lead.

From that point on, the Owls scored seven goals to Delaware's six. Lea Britton scored with 1:43 remaining in the half, and the Owls got another boost just before halftime with a goal by Jaymie Tabor, assisted by Demato.

Down 14-6 with nine minutes remaining, the Owls seemed to pick up the pace, getting more draw controls and more opportunities on offense. Tabor assisted on a goal by Rachel Schwaab with 8:55 left, and two minutes later, Demato completed her hat trick to get the Owls within six.

Over the next two minutes, Delaware added two more goals to put the game out of reach. Temple's Nicole Tiernan got the draw control after the Blue Hens' final goal, leading to the offensive possession that saw Stroup's first career goal with 4:05 left.

Delaware's Tori Zorovich made 11 saves in the cage while playing the complete game, while Temple's Jaqi Kakalecik made six and also played all 60 minutes.

"We've been a great second-half team," said Rosen, "but when you put yourself down that many goals, you can't win. Scoring nine goals won't win a game. We have to score over 10 for sure, and we need to be in the mid-teens to be securing a better win. It's about possession of the ball and then scoring on the attacking end."

Temple will be back in action at home on Wednesday, March 19, taking on Hofstra at 3:00 p.m.
