CHERRY HILL, N.J. – Camden Catholic High School announced that it will add seven members to its Green and White Athletics Hall of Fame on Saturday, April 12, 2014, including current Temple head softball coach Joe DiPietro ('76). DiPietro will join Ralph Bantivoglio '56 (posthumous) Kristina Branca Gozdan '86, Barbara Patterson '73, John Sigmund '96, David Slattery '82 and William Wheeler '86 in the Class of 2014.
Upon graduating from Gloucester County College, DiPietro returned to his alma mater and served 25 seasons as a softball coach. He spent the first 10 as an assistant before taking over the helm the last 15 seasons. During his tenure, DiPietro amassed a 274-98 record, and led the Irish to three New Jersey State Championships (1991, 1992, 1993). His 1991 and 1992 squads were voted the area's top-ranked team by both the Philadelphia Inquirer and the Courier-Post. In addition, DiPietro, the winningest coach in Camden Catholic softball history, was tabbed the South Jersey Softball Coaches Association Coach of the Year in 1991.
DiPietro left Camden Catholic to pursue coaching in the college ranks, landing at La Salle University for six seasons (2003-2008). In his six seasons with the Explorers, he guided his charges to 77 wins, with the 2008 squad posting the most victories (22) since 1997.
In July of 2008, DiPietro became just the fifth head coach in the history of the Temple softball program, a program which began in 1975. While at the helm of the Owls, DiPietro's teams have increased win totals every year, including a school-record 32 victories a year ago.
The 2013 season marked TU's final year in the Atlantic 10, and the Owls made it a memorable one. In addition to establishing the school record for wins with a 32-26 final mark, under his tutelage, junior Stephanie Pasquale became the first softball player in Temple history to earn All-America status with her selection to the NFCA?Division I Third Team. As a team, the Cherry & White set a school and conference record with 94 homeruns, a number that led the NCAA?in the regular-season.
DiPietro, who holds a 122-140 career record at Temple, has also coached with the Philadelphia Force of the National Pro Fastpitch League, the South Jersey Hurricanes Amateur Softball Association 18-and-under tournament team and the All-Star Trophies ASA Class A tournament team.
He resides in Mount Laurel, N.J., with his wife, Terry, and their daughter, Katie.
