PHILADELPHIA - After hanging tough in a well-played first half, Temple lacrosse faltered in the second against #19 Louisville and ultimately dropped a 15-6 decision to the visiting Cardinals (9-3, 3-0). Sophomore Nicole Tiernan scored four of the Owls' six goals, recording her second hat trick in three games.
Temple (4-8, 1-2) matched Louisville goal for goal over the first 15 minutes of the game, and the teams were tied at 2-2 until the final six minutes of the first half. The Cardinals closed the half on a 2-0 run for a 4-2 lead at the break, and they kept the momentum going throughout the second half.
Louisville's Kaylin Morissette not only scored twice to open the second half, but came on fire off the draw control. She ranks second in the nation in draw controls per game, and made that evident in the second half as she collected 10 of her game-high 12 draw controls. The statistic was a major change from the first half, when it was the Owls who had gotten six of seven draws.
Tiernan scored twice in the first 10 and a half minutes of the second half, but Louisville recorded four goals in the same stretch. Tiernan's second goal, her third of the game, put Temple within four goals at 8-4, but it was as close as the Owls would get. The Cardinals used a 6-0 run to put the game out of reach, and led 14-4 with 10:27 remaining.
Both Tiernan and freshman Carly Demato scored over a two-minute stretch to give the Owls life, but they did not have enough time to make a comeback.
Faye Brust led Louisville with five goals, while Nikki Boltja scored four and Cortnee Daley added three. Also scoring for the Owls was sophomore Rachel Schwaab.
The Owls will play their final home game of the season on Sunday at noon against Cincinnati. Temple's four seniors will be honored prior to the game for Senior Day.
