PISCATAWAY, N.J. - It was a heartbreaking finish in a must-win game for Temple lacrosse, as the Owls fell 11-10 at Rutgers on Friday night in the final game of the season. Temple and Rutgers both needed the win to keep their BIG EAST Tournament hopes alive, but the Owls' season is now done with an overall record of 6-10 and a BIG EAST record of 3-4.
Four teams will advance to the conference tournament, with Louisville, Georgetown and UConn already having clinched berths. Rutgers will await the results of Saturday's game between UConn and Villanova, and the Scarlet Knights will advance if Villanova loses that contest. Although Temple will finish in a tie with at least Rutgers and possibly Villanova, the Owls would come out short in any tie-breaker.
Temple took a 10-9 lead with 7:10 remaining, but Rutgers tied the game for a sixth time a minute later and went on to score the game-winner with 2:39 left on the clock. The Scarlet Knights earned the final draw control and maintained possession for the remainder of the contest.
Freshman Morgan Glassford scored a season-high four goals to lead Temple, notching her second hat trick of the year in the Owls' final game after also doing so in the first game of the season.
Senior Jaymie Tabor scored twice, as did sophomore Nicole Tiernan. Tabor assisted on three other goals for Temple to record a team-best five points in the game.
Lauren Sbrilli led Rutgers with four goals and two assists for a game-high six points.
The Owls had to overcome a 3-0 start for Rutgers after the first 10 minutes, but once the offense started, it came quickly. By the 13-minute mark of the first half, Temple had tied the game at 3-3.
After Rutgers went back ahead by two, the Owls once again answered with two of their own.
The final goal of the first half was by the Scarlet Knights, who took a 6-5 advantage into the break.
Tiernan, Glassford and Tabor put together a 3-0 run early in the second half for an 8-7 lead with 16:06 remaining. Temple still led at 9-8 and at 10-9 before the final two-goal run for Rutgers.
Also scoring for Temple were sophomores Rachel Schwaab and Megan Tiernan. Redshirt sophomore Jaqi Kakalecik made seven saves in goal for the Owls.
