On a beautiful day for football at Cardinal O'Hara High School in Springfield, PA, the Temple Owls football team ended their spring practice slate with the annual Cherry and White game. The White team, captained by senior RB Kenneth Harper, came away victorious with a 10-9 victory over the Cherry Squad.
Coach Matt Rhule didn't reveal a majority of his playbook during the game, but after redshirting last year, speedster Khalif Herbin was the difference maker, as he led the White team with five catches for 93 yards including one touchdown. Herbin also rushed twice for 16 yards. Harper carried the running load for the White team finishing with 43 yards on 6 carries.
Junior LB Tyler Matakevich captained the Cherry squad, and used his first overall choice in the Cherry and White Draft on sophomore QB P.J. Walker. Walker, making his Cherry and White game debut, finished the game 15-31 for 172 yards, including 2 INTs. Walker was efficient in the pocket spreading the ball around to eight different receivers.
His leading target was redshirt-junior John Christopher who reeled in four catches for 55 yards. The Cherry team got on the board with an explosive burst by junior running back Jamie Gilmore as he gashed the middle of the White team defense for a 65-yard untouched TD. Gilmore finished the day with 6 carries for 85 yards and the aforementioned touchdown run.
Connor Reilly anchored the White team with 204 yards passing going 15-27, which included 1 TD and 1 INT. Defensively for the White team, Haason Reddick stood out as he transitions into his role as a pass rusher. Reddick led the White team with six tackles and a sack.
For the Cherry squad, redshirt-freshman Julian Taylor led the way with seven tackles. Also on the defensive line, Averee Robinson also notched five tackles. Stephan Marshall tackled QB Thomas Rumer in the end zone after a high snap with under a minute remaining in the fourth quarter to bring the game to 10-9, but the Cherry offense was unable to score with 48 seconds remaining in the game.
