PHILADELPHIA - For the first time in program history, Temple lacrosse and Villanova (6-4, 1-0) will play each other as conference opponents when the Owls (3-7, 0-1) host the Wildcats on Saturday, April 5 at 1:00 p.m. Fans can watch a free live webstream of the game and also follow live stats through the links above.
Last Saturday's game against UConn was the first for Temple as an associate member of the BIG EAST Conference. The rest of the Owls' new lineup of conference opponents includes preseason BIG EAST favorite and #19 Georgetown as well as fellow associate members Rutgers and #20 Louisville along with Villanova, Cincinnati and Marquette. Both Rutgers and Louisville will leave after the 2014 season. Georgetown will serve as the host of the BIG EAST Championships, set for Thursday and Saturday, May 1 and 3.
Of the eight teams in the BIG EAST, Temple was picked to finish fifth in the preseason poll. The Owls' first four conference games are at home, which is where all three of Temple's wins have come this season.
The Wildcats are 6-4 overall and won their BIG EAST opener by a score of 14-11 vs. Rutgers. They have won three of their last four contests, and two of their four season losses are to teams that were ranked in the Top 20 (Navy and Notre Dame). Five players have scored more than 10 goals for Villanova, led by Meghan Breen with 17 goals and seven assists for 24 total points.
The Owls have never lost to Villanova in the seven contests between the teams. The most recent win was a narrow, 12-11 victory at Villanova on April 14, 2009. The year prior, Temple won 21-7 at home.
Senior Jaymie Tabor has been scoring at a rapid pace to lead Temple, and her 21 goals (2.62 goals per game) currently rank third among all players in the BIG EAST Conference. She has scored at least one goal in all eight games she has played in after missing the season opener and one other contest due to injury. Tabor recorded her third hat trick of the season with three goals in a close, 11-9 loss at UMBC on March 22, and notched her fourth hat trick with three goals in the Owls' conference opener vs. UConn on March 29.
Sophomore Nicole Tiernan has also put together some impressive efforts in recent games for the Owls. She scored the game-tying and game-winning goals to cap an incredible effort by Temple in a 9-8 overtime win against Hofstra on March 19, and she led the team with four goals in the BIG EAST opener against UConn on March 29.
Tiernan ranks second on the team with 15 total goals, and also ranks second with seven caused turnovers. She notched the first hat trick of her career in a close loss at Denver on March 8.
