First Inning Run Stands in Softball's 1-0 Loss at Memphis

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Temple softball took on Memphis on Sunday, April 6, for the rubber match of the three-game series at Tiger Softball Complex this weekend. After splitting a pair of games on Saturday, April 5, the host Tigers took the final game on Sunday, 1-0.
Memphis made a first inning run stand for the duration to come away with the shutout victory. It was another solid effort from both pitchers, with each giving up just four hits. For Temple hurler Jessica Mahoney, two of those came in the fateful opening inning when Lindsay Crowdus led off with a double and later scored on Brittany Vaughn's single to right field.
The Owls were not without their opportunities, stranding nine on the basepath. TU had runners on second and third in the fifth after a one-out single from Toni Santos and a double from Sarah Prezioso, but Ellen Roberts got a pop out and a strike out to get out of the jam.
The Cherry & White had another chance to extend the game, loading the bases in the top of the seventh. With one out, Devynne Nelons walked and Santos reached on a fielding error. One out later, Julia Kastner drew a walk to fill the bases, but Roberts again induced a pop out to end the threat and the game.
Mahoney (1-6) went 6.0 innings, walking three and fanning three. Roberts (9-12) walked two and struck out four in 7.0 innings of work.
Santos was 2-for-3 for Temple.
The Owls (10-17, 1-5 AAC) return to action on Wednesday for a non-conference doubleheader at Towson beginning at 3 p.m.
