On a beautiful, sunny Mother's Day morning, more than 120,000 people participated in the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure in Philadelphia. The 5K walk/run was established to raise funds and awareness for breast cancer.
For the eighth straight year, the Temple Owls football team volunteered to help the Susan G. Komen Foundation set up for the event and assist during the event. In addition, for the second year in a row, head coach Matt Rhule and his wife, Julie, entered a team – Team TUFF (Temple University Football Family) – to participate in the race.
The event touches close to home for the Rhule family, as Julie's mother lost an unfortunate battle with breast cancer in 2012 and Matt's mother is a breast cancer survivor. Many of the players have also been personally touched by the disease. DL Brandon Chudnoff, whose mother is a survivor and attended the race, has been a Komen supporter even before his days at Temple.
