BALTIMORE - Temple's Nicole Tiernan is one 84 players who have been invited to try out for the U.S. Lacrosse Women's National Team in a three-day tryout at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. The tryout is taking place June 13-15, and approximately 36-40 players will be selected to the 2014-15 U.S. Women's National Team.
That team will train together as part of the lead-up to the 2017 Federation of International Lacrosse (FIL) Women's World Cup in Surrey, England. Ultimately, 18 players will represent the U.S. as the team goes for a third consecutive and eighth overall world title.
"I am so excited for Nicole to have this opportunity," said Temple head coach Bonnie Rosen. "She is just beginning to realize how great of a lacrosse player she can be and I am thrilled that she will get the chance this weekend to compete against, play with, and learn from the best players in the country. I am so proud of Nicole for being to willing to go after this dream and I, along with all of her coaches and teammates, wish her the best of luck this weekend!"
Tiernan, a 2014 All-BIG EAST Second Team honoree, just completed her sophomore season for the Owls. She was Temple's second-leading scorer overall with 29 goals, and led the team with 18 goals in BIG EAST games. With 2.57 goals per game in conference contests, Tiernan ranked fourth in the league. She led the Owls with 13 caused turnovers, and made a difference in every game with her speed and play-making ability. Tiernan recorded four hat tricks, and scored in the final nine games of the season.Â
This will be the first time the women's U.S. Team has elected to have an invitation-only tryout in lieu of an open first round of tryouts. Beginning in late March, players had to submit themselves for consideration to be invited. Invitations were extended on April 30th to those selected to try out.

A total of nine players from the squad that won gold at the 2013 FIL World Cup in Oshawa, Ontario, return to try out, including all-world performers in attackers Katrina Dowd and Lindsey Munday, as well as goalkeeper Devon Wills. Among other World Cup returners are attacker Danielle Etrasco, midfielders Sarah Bullard, Caitlyn McFadden, Kelly Rabil and Katie Schwarzmann, and defender Jenn Russell. Additionally, eight players from the gold-medal winning 2011 U.S. Women's Under-19 Team will look to earn a spot on the senior team.
