PHILADELPHIA - Temple's cross country schedule for the 2014 season has been released, and has the Owls' men's and women's teams starting competition in late August.
Temple will compete in four races prior to the American Athletic Conference Championships on Oct. 31. This year's conference meet will be hosted by Tulsa, one of three new members in the American for 2014-15.
The Owls will spend a few days training in Boone, N.C., in late August. While there, they will also race in their first meet, the Covered Bridge Open on Friday, Aug. 29.
The annual Big 5 Invitational will let Temple race close to home on Sept. 12 at Belmont Plateau in West Fairmount Park. The meet will honor the memory of Temple's Roswell Friend, who passed away in 2011. The Owls will also host an alumni get-together in conjunction with their home meet, and they expect to have many former runners in attendance.
After three more weeks of training, the Owls' third race will take them to New Britain, Conn., for the Ted Owen Invitational.
The final warm-up meet for the conference championship will be on Oct. 11 in State College, Pa., as the Owls compete in the Penn State National Invitational for the first time in three years. That race will also serve as a preview for the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional on Nov. 14, which will be held on the same course.
Two weeks after the American Athletic Conference Championships, the Owls will hope to have many of their runners race in that NCAA Regional meet back in State College. The ECAC/IC4A Championships are the following week in New York, and the season culminates with the NCAA Championships on Nov. 22 in Terre Haute, Ind.
Temple's leading returner on the women's side is senior Jenna Dubrow, who placed sixth in last year's ECAC Championships and 23rd in the inaugural American Athletic Conference Championships. Dubrow closed out the recent outdoor track season by breaking her own school record in the 10,000 meter and taking third in the event at the ECAC Championships.
Leading the veterans on the men's side will be junior Alex Izewski and redshirt junior Matt Kacyon. Izewski was the Owls' top finisher at the 2013 IC4A Championships, taking 11th place. He is also the school record-holder for Temple in the indoor 5,000 meter run after taking fifth place at last year's American Athletic Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships.
Kacyon took a redshirt year during last year's cross country season, but was one of the Owls' top performers for outdoor track. He placed second in the 3,000 meter steeplechase at the American Athletic Conference Championships, third in the same event at the IC4A Championships, and went on to represent Temple at the NCAA East Region Preliminary.
