Owls Complete Tenth Practice of Camp
8.11.14 | Football
The Temple Owls kicked off their second full week of practice on Monday, August 11; this was their tenth practice of training camp. After practice, head coach Matt Rhule was asked to speak to the attending media. Excerpts from his post-practice conferences can be found below. For the full video, click here.
Training camp will continue tomorrow at Edberg-Olson Hall at 8 am.
Head Coach Matt Rhule:
On instilling confidence in his players: "I want players to know that I believe in them. I'm very direct; the whole point of being really direct and telling guys what they're doing wrong is so when you tell them what they're doing right, they can trust it…I'm going to be very direct with the guys in telling them 'you're doing this right, you're doing this wrong' so that they can focus on that. No one would be here if we didn't believe in them, no one would be getting reps if we didn't think they could do it. So it's constantly telling guys 'I know you can do this.'"
On Praise Martin: "When I was here as a coach, when Praise was here the first time, I knew Praise was really, really explosive. So I can see that he has the physical ability…he's just got himself in shape. He likes contact, he likes football; as he starts getting tired, his play declines. By getting him in shape, having a really good offseason program, we're now seeing the after effects of that. He's playing at a nice level right now; he's rushing the passer, he's violent in terms of his movements. I expect him to have a really good year for us."
Freshman K Austin Jones:
On adjusting to the team after coming from Orlando: "The first few days were a little different. Now I'm getting used to it, because I'm all around the same guys…it is a little different, but I like it."
On the kicking competition: "Everyone's trying really hard. I think I am in the running for the job, but I think everyone else is too. We're all trying really hard, its' really competitive out there."
Redshirt junior K Tyler Mayes:
On emphasis Coach Rhule has put on kicking during camp: "Coach has put a lot of emphasis on special teams. He brought in a lot of guys; we have three longsnappers, we have a bunch of kickers, a bunch of punters. So they're really putting a lot of emphasis on special teams, because it's one-third of the game…we're taking a lot of time in meetings and breaking down film with Coach [Mike] Siravo and analyzing each one of our techniques to find out what we can do better."
