SIGHTS & SOUNDS FROM PRACTICE
The Owls held their second two-a-day practice on Wednesday, August 13. After the first practice of the day, head coach Matt Rhule spoke with the attending media. Below are select quotes from Coach Rhule. To see the full video, click here.
In addition, Coach Rhule, junior LB Tyler Matakevich and sophomore QB P.J. Walker had a message to send to the Taney Dragons, the Philadelphia Little League team representing the Mid-Atlantic Region at the Little League World Series in Williamsport, PA, later this week.
On team injuries: "We've got a lot of guys banged up, nothing serious, nothing I think is long term; especially the young guys. One week here, two weeks there. Our older guys have learned how to take care of their bodies, how to be pros and handle the rigors of camp, so I feel good about that. But the young guys, hopefully we'll get them back by Friday or Saturday heading into next week."
On the status of running backs: "I feel really good about Kenny [Harper]. Jaime [Gilmore] was having a really good camp, but he got hurt. Hasson Dixon had a good scrimmage and we moved Jahad Thomas over and he's done a really nice job. We know Zaire [Williams] had a really good season for us last year. No one has really emerged yet and that's what this second scrimmage on Saturday will have to be about. Who can show us they have the big play capability? We know we have lots of guys who can do things right but who can take eight and turn it into eighty? That's what we're really looking for."
On pass rushers: "I think we're generating some heat. Praise [Martin], I think it starts with him and Sharif [Finch]. Avery Ellis, Jacob Martin, Hassan Reddick as well. On the outside, those guys are doing a nice job...I think it's improving. It's always hard when you go against each other every day to tell where exactly you are, but I think we have some guys who can rush."
