PHILADELPHIA - Temple women's soccer defeated Saint Joseph's 1-0 on the road at Sweeney Field on Friday night. The Owls continue their winning ways to improve to 3-0 while Saint Joseph's drops to 1-2.
"It was a really good battle in a city game," said head coach Seamus O'Connor. "The atmosphere was great tonight, and the team was really ready to play. We contained a pretty good Saint Joseph offense and limited their chances.
Gina DiTaranto scored the game-winning goal with less than three minutes left in regulation off a header. Erin Lafferty registered an assist as she passed it from the left side on a set kick. The goal was DiTaranto's fourth of the season.
"Gina's goal was a really great play. Erin made a tremendous pass. Gina got the ball really close to the line and scored from a tough angle and limited space. Technique wise it was very tough, but she somehow managed it."
Shauni Kerkhoff (3-0) had six saves for her second shutout of the season. She made four of them in the first half to stop the Hawks.
"Shauni had one really big save in the first half for us. Overall, the team did well to make sure they didn't have many great chances against her."
Temple returns to action next Friday at Rider at 7:00 p.m. where they will attempt to tie the program's best start in history set last season.
