News and Notes Following Temple's 37-7 win at Vanderbilt
With the win, Temple recorded its first victory in 75 years against a team currently in the SEC. The last time TU won such a game was a 20-12 victory at Florida on 12/3/38.
With Vanderbilt's only score coming on a special teams play, the defense posted a shutout. In the first half they held the Commodores to 6 punts and 2 fumbles on 8 drives and 0-6 on third down. Following a missed FG attempt to start the 2nd half, Temple's defense forced Vandy into 4 consecutive turnovers before the final quarter began.
Overall, the Owls collected 7 takeaways, (4 FRs and 3 INTs) and were a +5 in turnover margin. Last season Temple had just 13 takeaways and finished -6 for the year.
DB Tavon Young, wearing the #1 jersey for the game given to one of the team's toughest players, recorded two interceptions. Dating back to 2012 he notched 5 of the Owls 7 most recent picks. With a Cequan Jefferson interception late in the game, the Owls recorded three INTs – the same amount for all of 2013.
Sophomore DL Avery Ellis, seeing his first game action since 2012 after redshirting a year ago, recorded 2.0 sacks, one which resulted in a fumble by QB Stephen Rivers that was recovered and returned for a TD by Averee Robinson.
DL Averee Robinson had two fumble recoveries. He took the second one 55 yards for a touchdown. In 2010,his brother Adrian Robinson returned a fumble 33 yards for an Owls' score at Connecticut.
QB P.J. Walker finished the game with 207 yards and two TDs completing 23 of 34 passes. He has now thrown for 200+ yards in each of his 8 career starts. He added 21 and one TD on the ground.
WR Brandon Shippen, a converted DB, caught his first collegiate pass on 4th-and-5 and took it 35 yards to the end zone for his first career TD. He finished with 2 catches for 60 yards and one score.
WR Nate Hairston led the Owls with 7 catches for 48 yards. He recorded 7 catches during the entire 2013 campaign.
The kicking game was handled by two freshmen. Punter Alex Starzyk held a 41.6 yard average on 7 punts. Kicker Austin Jones was 2-3 on FGs (19 and 28) and added 4 PATs for a total of 10 points. With a late FG by Tyler Mayes, the Owls had 3 FGs matching their totals for all of 2013.
