Owls Complete First Practice of Team's First Two-A-Day
8.7.14 | Football
The Temple Owls held their first two-a-day session on Thursday, August 7. After the first practice of the day, head coach Matt Rhule and OL Kyle Friend were asked to speak with the media. Select quotes from Coach Rhule and Friend can be found below. Complete videos of Coach Rhule can be found here (part 1, part 2); Friend's meeting with the media can be found here.
The team will hold a regular practice tomorrow, August 8, at Edberg-Olsen Hall beginning at 8 am.
Coach Rhule on the first session of the team's first two-a-day: "First two-a-day - quick, fast, spirited, ended with some short yardage. I thought we focused on running the ball a little bit more in full pads. I thought the defense early on couldn't quite keep up with the offense, at the end they surged. We're giving a lot of guys reps, going one's, two's and three's, we're trying to see what all the young kids can do. So it's a function of what we believe in, giving guys opportunities."
Coach Rhule on Kyle Friend: "Kyle is obviously the guy we hang our hat on up front, he makes sure everyone is on the same page. He's playing at a really high levelā¦"
"I think [the offensive line] follow what he does. There's no one who works harder or is more invested in the program than Kyle, and those other guys are very similar. They know Kyle's been playing a long time and just seem to follow what he does."
Coach Rhule on Khalif Herbin: "He looks good. He had a long touchdown down the sidelines today, he's an explosive player. But what he's done is he's bought into attention to detail, he's bought into playing when he's tired, he's bought into all those other things when the ball's not in his hands. And that makes it easier to get the ball into his hands because he's doing all the little things. I'm really pleased with him."
Kyle Friend on his goals for the offseason: "The biggest goal for myself this offseason was just to bring a lot of guys with me... I really tried to focus on bringing some of these younger guys with me and that's probably the biggest thing I can do."
Kyle Friend on Shabazz Ahmed: "I think he's coming along. He's new, he moved to offensive line this spring. He's making strides, just like the rest of us he's got a lot to work on. But I think he's coming along; he gained a lot of weight, which was something he needed to do. But, I think Shabazz will be alright."
