Owls Hold First Intra-Squad Scrimmage

The Owls held their intra-squad first scrimmage on Saturday, August 9. Afterwards, head coach Matt Rhule, QB P.J. Walker, WR Jalen Fitzpatrick and LB Tyler Matakevich spoke to the attending media. Coach Rhule:
On freshman DB Sean "Champ" Chandler: "He has a pick a day. Sean's a good player, we knew that, he's showing he can make plays…I think we have a good one in Champ. He's focused and driven, he pays attention. It's when you have a talented young kid and he really wants to be good, he's willing to put the work in to be good, then you've got something. I think we have that in Champ."
On WR Jalen Fitzpatrick: "Jalen's been focused, Jalen has been going 100 miles an hour. He's done some great work inside, he's done some great work outside. Having him bring that big play threat is exactly what we need. It's always great when your seniors are saying 'hey, I want to play my best football.'"
Sophomore QB P.J. Walker:
On team's first scrimmage: "Coming out, we got off to a fast start. We just have to finish a lot faster, just execute on offense…we just have to keep getting better each day."
On team's progress since last year: "I think we've grown a lot. When I came in last year, we were still making crucial mistakes we shouldn't have made. I think the players now have all bought in to what the coaches are telling us…they're giving us the right information, we just have to go out there and execute it."
On backup QBs Lenny Williams and Tim DiGorgio: "I think they both played really well. Once Lenny got it figured out that he was live, he felt a lot more comfortable because he got to run around and do things he's capable of doing. To have them both go out there and execute the way they did, it was pretty good, especially after the second week of camp."
Senior WR Jalen Fitzpatrick:
On his physical changes from last year: "Physically, I'm in better running condition thanks to Coach [Jeremy] Scott, I think the whole team is. Conditioning-wise, we're way beyond last year."
Junior LB Tyler Matakevich:
On what he saw today: "A lot of good things – defensively, we are flying around. The big thing this year is we have to create turnovers; no big plays; and we have to finish."
