GREENVILLE, N.C. – Temple women's soccer lost 2-0 at East Carolina Sunday afternoon. The Owls drop to 8-3 and 1-1 in the conference while the Pirates improve to 7-3-1 and 1-1 in the conference.
East Carolina gained control early in the first half with a set play as Lana Spitler scored at the 7:38 minute mark. The Owls fought hard with some quality shots but ended the half down 1-0.
During the second half, the Owls came out aggressively with several decent attempts at target but could not find the goal. East Carolina's Lana Spitler scored again late in the game at the 86:49 minute mark due to Temple's focus on the attack, The score stayed 2-0 until the end of regulation.
"Very unlucky," said head coach Seamus O'Connor. "Morgan Elliot and Alyssa Kirk both went out with injuries and it unbalanced us. The girls played great. I thought we were the better team, but our conference is very unforgiving. At the end of the weekend I am satisfied with collecting three conference points. If we can do that every weekend we will be on the right track. We just need to get healthy and bounce back, and if not we will come up with a plan B. I am not disappointed with the girls today."
Starting goalkeeper Shauni Kerkhoff recorded six saves today, which brings her career saves total to 207. She now holds the 5th all-time spot, passing Courtney Woytowicz (1999-2000) who previously held the spot with 204 saves.
The Owls will be back in action Thursday, Oct. 2nd against Tulsa where they return home to Ambler Sports Complex. This will be the Owls' first home game since their 3-0 victory over Mount Saint Mary's on Aug. 24th. The game is scheduled for a 4:00 pm start.
