Women’s Tennis Wins Final Match at VCU Invite

RICHMOND, VA. – On the final day of the VCU Invite, the women's tennis team defeated Norfolk State, 5-0 to start the season with a 2-1 record.
In doubles play, Rebecca Breland and Yana Khon defeated NSU's Liza Gordeeva and Yvonne Kemegne, 6-7, 6-4, 10-6.
The Owls swept singles play in three straight sets. Leading the Owls at the number one flight, Alina Abdurakhimova defeated Andrea Macchiavello, 6-1, 6-1. At the third flight, Anais Nussaume was right behind as she defeated Mafalda Lhorca 6-2, 6-3. Finishing third at the second flight, Dina Karina beat Krystal Scott, 6-2, 6-3.
Head coach Steve Mauro was very impressed with the way his squad played in their season opener.
"I was really happy with the way the girls came out to play today," said Mauro. "They were very focused. Considering it's early in the season, I was really happy with their effort and their consistency."
The Owls are back in action on January 30, as they travel to Big 5 rival Penn at 3:00 p.m.
