Women's Rowing Wins Three Races to Open 2015-16 Season

PHILADELPHIA – The Temple women's rowing team opened the 2015-16 season with three victories at the Navy Day Regatta on the Schuylkill River. The Owls grabbed wins in the collegiate four, as well as the freshman eight and four races.

The three wins from Temple at this year's event marked a significant improvement over last season's opening race. In the 2014 event, the Owls' highest finish across all races was sixth place.

"We started a new chapter for Temple women's rowing today," said assistant coach Alyssa O'Donnell. "We're off to a great start and we can't wait for what's to come."

In the collegiate four race, three Owl boats placed in the top-eight. The Temple "A" boat clocked in a 15:51.63 taking first in a field of 21 boats, nearly eight seconds faster than second-place St. Joseph's. Temple's "B" boat finished in a time of 16:03.05 to place fifth, while the "C" boat was eighth in 16:39.89.

In the freshman eight event, Temple defeated a field of 10 boats. The final time of 15:05.98 was over three seconds faster than second-place Navy.

Temple also took first place in the freshman four race. The Owls clocked in at 16:49.32, a margin of over 23 seconds in a field of seven boats.

Elsewhere, the Owls recorded two more top-10 finishes. In the collegiate eight race, Temple's "A" boat took ninth in a time of 14:38.08, while in the JV eight event, Temple finished 10th in 15:09.53. Wrapping up the racing, Temple's "B" boat in the collegiate eight event placed 13 in a field of 20, recording a final time of 15:08.86.

The Owls will return to the water next weekend, competing at the historic Head of the Charles Regatta in Boston, Mass.
