PHILADELPHIA – The Temple women's rowing team closed out a very successful fall racing season with four medals at the 2015 Head of the Schuylkill Regatta. The Owls grabbed two medals in the championship pairs event and also earned medals in both the novice four and novice eight races.
"Today we concluded the fall racing season and we couldn't have ended better," said Assistant Coach Alyssa O'Donnell. "With more than half our entries finishing in the top-six, I think we really showcased the speed that we have developed this fall."
In the championship pairs event, the duo of Lily Papaleo and Emily Opperman finished in silver medal position, recording a time of 17:35.26. They were just ahead of teammates Lea Millio and Emilie Mehler (17:36.64), who took bronze in the 12-entry field.
The Owls' novice entries also faired well, as the Temple "A" fours boat took silver in the 24-boat field, recording a time of 17:05.72. In the novice eight event, Temple's "A" boat placed third to take bronze in 15:34.20, nearly 45 seconds faster than the fourth-place crew. Also in the novice eight race, the Owls' "B" entry ranked 10th (17:01.06) in the 41-boat field.
Temple's first varsity eight boat raced in the ultra-competitive championship eights field, taking sixth place overall. The crew recorded a time of 15:05.54, under 10 seconds out of the medals in a field of 19. Also finishing strong were Temple's two club eight entries. The Owl "A" boat was just 1.06 seconds off of a medal finish, recording a time of 15:23.12. Temple's second entry in the race ranked 25th in the deep, 47-crew field.
Temple also recorded top-10 finishes in the pairs and singles events. Charlotte Forman competed in the championship singles race, recording a time of 17:58.91 to out-pace over half of the 17-boat field. Emilie Mehler and Emily Leyland also finished in the top-10, clocking in at 18:45.24 in the championship pairs race.
Wrapping up the Temple varsity finishes, the Owls had two strong races in the championship fours event. The Owls took 14th (16:56.94) and 16th (17:01.40) in the largest event contested, a 51-boat field.
In alumni racing, Temple won the event for the second year in a row, recording over an eight-second victory. Former Owls also took eighth and 11th places in the event.
"I feel we're in a really good place right now and we're excited to continue to train and find more speed for the Spring 2016 season," concluded O'Donnell.
