Volleyball Set for Wednesday Match-Up at UConn

PHILADELPHIA -- The Temple volleyball team heads to UConn for a Wednesday American Athletic Conference match-up. 

THIS WEEK
Temple has a unique schedule of matches this week, beginning with a rare mid-week match at UConn on Wednesday at 5:00 p.m. The Owls are off on Friday and will host East Carolina on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. for Temple's Dig Pink match.

LAST TIME OUT: TEMPLE
Temple split a road series against a pair of teams that were tied for second in the American Athletic Conference. The Owls fell to SMU on Friday, 3-0, but rebounded with a 3-1 win at Tulsa on Sunday. 
    On Friday, the Owls dropped their first conference match of the season, falling to SMU on the road, 3-0 (25-13, 25-23, 25-17). Temple was hampered by hitting errors, as strong net play from SMU led to 26 attack errors for the Owls. Sophomore Tyler Davis led the Owls with nine kills, while junior Kirsten Overton tallied six with a pair of blocks.     
    On Sunday, Temple posted a 3-1 victory at Tulsa, winning 25-18, 23-25, 25-16, 25-12. The Owls rebounded from Friday night's loss in a big way, recording a season-high 16 total blocks. Overton and sophomore Janine Simmons led the strong net play, each finishing with season-highs of eight total blocks. Offensively, sophomore Irem Asci notched a double-double with a team-high 13 kills to go along with 10 digs.

CONFERENCE LEADERS
Temple hits a conference-best .278, while also leading The American in kills per set (14.28). Individually, Overton leads The American in hitting percentage (.454) and is third in blocks per set (1.08). Asci is third in the conference in kills per set (4.00), while Sydlik is second in assists per set (11.52). Alyssa Drachslin ranked fifth in the conference in digs, averaging 5.02 per set.

AMERICAN HONOR ROLL
Drachslin earned a spot on the American Weekly honor roll, her second of the season and the sixth for the Owls. The senior averaged 5.68 digs per set for the week, hitting the 20-dig mark and tallying match-high totals in both of Temple's matches. Against SMU, Drachslin recorded a 20-dig effort, while also receiving 17 serves without an error. In a win over Tulsa, the libero tallied 21 digs to lead all players. For the week, Drachslin tallied 41 total digs and a .979 reception percentage, recording only one reception error in 47 attempts.
  
OWL LEADERS
Asci leads the team with 4.00 kills per set, followed by Davis (2.83) and sophomore Izzy Rapacz (2.65). Overton leads the team with a .454 hitting percentage, while also racking up 2.49 kills per set. Senior Sandra Sydlik has dished out 11.52 assists per set, while classmate Alyssa Drachslin leads the defense with 5.02. digs per set. 
    Overton leads the Temple block, recording 65 total, while sophomore Janine Simmons has 59, including a team-best eight solo. Rapacz has 55 total blocks to round out the net leaders.

NATIONALLY-RANKED
Temple appears in the top-25 in three national stat categories this week. Temple is 13th in hitting percentage (.278) and 15th in the nation in kills per set (14.28). Additionally, the Owls rank 24th with 13.18 assists per set. Individually, Overton ranks 2nd in the nation in hitting percentage (.454), while Sydlik ranks 11th nationally in assists per set (11.52). 

SCOUTING UCONN
UConn is 10-7 overall, with a 1-5 mark in the American Athletic Conference. The Huskies most recently dropped a pair of matches to Tulsa and SMU on the road last weekend. Individually, Isabella Anagu is averaging 1.17 blocks per set, which clocks in at No. 85 in the national rankings and second in the league. Freshman Kennedy Arundel  stands eighth in the conference and 130th in the country in digs/set (4.21).

OWLS AGAINST THE HUSKIES
Temple is 6-2 all-time against UConn. Last season, the teams split the series, with each team claiming its home match. UConn beat Temple in Connecticut, 3-0, while Temple beat UConn in Philadelphia, 3-2.  

NEXT UP
After the UConn match, the Owls will return home to play East Carolina on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. The ECU game begins a string of three-straight home matches, as Temple also welcomes Houston and Tulane to McGonigle Hall the following weekend. 

DIG PINK
