Izewski and Kacyon Take Top-20 Finishes at Paul Short Run for Men's Cross Country

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Seniors Alex Izewski and Matt Kacyon placed 18th and 19th, respectively, in a field of 278 runners at the 42nd annual Paul Short Run on Friday morning. Both of them ran personal-best times in the 8K race, with Izewski finishing in 24:30 and Kacyon on his heels in 24:31.
"This was a national class field," said coach James Snyder, "and a really solid day for our guys. For Alex and Matt to do so well and both run personal bests today is a great indicator of the hard work they've put in throughout the past year. They came back this fall in the best shape of their lives and they're gunning for spots at the national meet in six weeks. They both deserve to be in that conversation."
Izewski and Kacyon's performances helped lead the Owls to a 16th-place finish among 27 teams in the College Men's Gold race. That finish is the highest ever for Temple at the Paul Short, beating the Owls' previous best of 19th place in 2012. Temple finished behind American Athletic Conference foe UConn (11th place) but ahead of Tulane (17th) and East Carolina (26th).
Temple had one other finisher in the top-100, with junior Stephan Listabarth taking 98th in a time of 25:28. Senior Will Maltin ran a personal-best time of 25:50 to place 125th. Nine Temple runners competed in two different 8K races, with all finishing in personal-best times.
"Our freshmen did a really good job competing in the race, which was just their second 8K race ever," said Snyder. "I was happy with how poised they looked competing at this level, but that's not something we can rest on. We still need them to close the gap and we'll be relying on those guys to do that."
Some Temple runners will be back in action next Saturday, Oct. 10 at the Jack St. Clair Memorial Invite in Philadelphia. The full team will return to action Oct. 17 at the Princeton Invitational.
