Women's Soccer Enters Last Stretch of Season with SMU

10.21.15 | Women's Soccer

PHILADELPHIA – As the season comes to a close, the Temple women's soccer team will host its last final matches at home, starting with a Thursday afternoon matchup with the SMU Mustangs. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.

Temple added another win to the books after they defeated Memphis on Sunday, 2-1 in overtime, moving them to 10-6-1 on the season and 2-4-1 in American Athletic Conference. This is the first time in program history that the team has registered back-to-back season of double-digit wins (last season the team finished 11-8-1).

After the Tigers took an early 1-0 lead in the sixth minute, junior Elaine Byerley helped tie things up in the 22nd minute and redshirt-junior Gina DiTaranto knocked in the game-winning goal in the 97th minute of play. DiTaranto was named to the American Athletic Conference Honor Roll for the second week in a row; she joins Kelly Farrell as the only player to receive the honor in two consecutive weeks.

Freshman goalkeeper Jordan Nash ranks fourth in the conference in with 60 saves, .833 save percentage, and 12 goals against her for a 0.88 goals against average. With only 15 goals scored against them this year, the Owls are on track to allow the least amount of goals scored in a season (record is 22 set back in 1995).

Temple currently leads the conference in goals scored (36), score average (2.12) and points (93).

ABOUT?SMU…
SMU enters the last week of the regular season with a 5-8-3 record, going 2-4-1 in conference play.

In their last game out, the Mustangs were shut-out by #20 USF, 2-0. Despite having five consecutive shot attempts in the second half and nine in total, SMU was unable to get anything into the net for their second-consecutive loss.

Redshirt-freshman Vanessa Valadez leads the Mustangs in goals with seven and points with 18. Valadez and senior Lissi Lonsberry are tied for assists at four a piece. Junior Paige Jacobs and sophomore Claire Oates have both knocked in two game-winning goals for SMU.

SMU has played Temple more than any other of the American Athletic Conference teams, thanks in part to two conference tournament appearances in 2013 and 2014.

SERIES HISTORY…
Since the inception of the American, the Mustangs and Owls have met four times with SMU leading the series, 4-0-0. Last season, the Mustangs defeated the Owls 1-0 in the regular season and in the opening round of the American Athletic Conference tournament.
