Men's Soccer Drops Match Against UCF, 3-1

ORLANDO, Fla. – After an explosive effort in the first 10 minutes of its game, Temple men's soccer ultimately fell to American Athletic Conference rival UCF this evening, 3-1. The Owls now stand at 7-3-2 on the season and have yet to log a victory against a conference opponent.

Belal Mohamed helped give the Owls an early lead, scoring his second career goal in the eighth minute off a right-side cross from sophomore Joonas Jokinen, who made his first game start of the season. Mohamed was able to grab the pass and beat the Knights' keeper to find the back of the net.

The Owls' defense was able to keep the Knights out of the net through the remainder of the first half, despite UCF logging eight shots and two corner kicks before halftime.

As the second half opened, the Knights hit an equalizer quickly in the 54th minute. Walker Dawkins collected a rebound from a UCF free kick taken by Matias Pyysalo to find the top corner of the net. Five minutes later, Hadji Barry took a shot off his own rebound to log his seventh goal of the season and put the Knights up 2-1.

The Knights' final goal came in the 84th minute from Dre Deas who was able to beat Owls' goalkeeper, Alex Cagle, to slip in his first goal of the season and put the Knights up 3-1.

Cagle made an impressive six saves throughout the match despite allowing three from the opponent. In total, the Knights outshot the Owls 20-3 with a pressure-filled half from UCF.

The Owls will make their way home to prepare for their conference home-opener on Saturday, Oct. 10 against Memphis. The match is set to kick off at 2:00 p.m. at the Ambler Sports Complex.
