PHILADELPHIA --Â The Temple women's basketball team has signed a pair of recruits for the 2016-17 season. Next year's Owls will include Shannen Atkinson and Shantay Taylor, who signed national letters of intent to play for the Owls.Â
"We are very excited to welcome Shannen and Shantay to our basketball family," said Head Coach Tonya Cardoza. "Shannen is very athletic and will be a tremendous presence for us both offensively and defensively. Her ability to rebound and run the floor will be very beneficial to our style of play. Shantay will also bring depth at the post position. I really love the fact that Shantay is a late bloomer with a promising upside. She is a very hard worker who already has the strength to play at this level. She is a versatile post player who can score with her back to the basket or facing up. Most importantly, I'm thrilled to add both players to our family because they are overall two very good kids."
Shannen Atkinson is a 6-4 post player from Smithfield HS in Smithfield, Va. As a junior, she averaged a double-double with 17.5 points per game and 12.8 rebounds per game. Atkinson was named the conference Player of the Year, as well as a first-team All-Conference selection. She played AAU basketball for Boo Williams, the same team that future teammates Feyonda Fitzgerald and Khadijah Berger played with.
Shantay Taylor is a 6-3 forward from Spring Valley HS in Columbia, S.C.. As a junior, Taylor averaged 9.4 points, 8.7 rebounds, 1.9 blocks, and 1.0 assists per game, while helping her team to a 25-4 record. She led the Vikings to the South Carolina Class 4A State Championship title en route to earning All-Region and All-State honors. Taylor carries a 3.5 GPA while taking honor courses. She plays AAU ball for the NC Spartans and intends to major in Nursing at Temple University.Â
