Men's and Women's Cross Country Head to NCAA Regionals Friday
11.12.15 | Men's Cross Country, Women's Cross Country
PHILADELPHIA - NCAA Championship berths are on the line for men's and women's cross country on Friday, Nov. 13, as the Owls head to the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional Championships hosted by Princeton. Temple is looking for a few runners to potentially advance to next week's championship race in Louisville, Ky. The women's 6K race is set for noon, with the men's 10K race to follow at 1 p.m.
Leading the women's team is graduate student Blanca Fernandez, who is unbeaten in the 2015 season with wins in all five races she has competed in. Two weeks ago, Fernandez earned the title of American Athletic Conference Women's Cross Country Champion, finishing the 6K race in a personal-best time of 20:06. It was her fourth conference title since coming to Temple in January, after she won two for indoor track and a third for outdoor track. Fernandez is also ultimately looking for her third NCAA All-America honor in her third season with the Owls. She garnered All-America Second Team honors for both indoor and outdoor track at the NCAA Championships.
Jenna Dubrow, who graduated from Temple in May, was the Owls' top finisher at the NCAA Regional meet last year, placing 43rd. Current sophomore Katie Pinson was Temple's number two runner at regionals a year ago, placing 71st.
The men's team, currently ranked 13th in the Mid-Atlantic Region, is led by seniors Matt Kacyon and Alex Izewski. The pair placed eighth and 12th, respectively, at the American Athletic Conference Championships to earn all-conference honors and lead the Owls to a fourth-place finish among nine teams. Kacyon ran a personal-best time of 24:07.56 for the 8K at the conference meet, while Izewski finished in a personal-best 24:17.79. Junior Stephan Listabarth has been in the mix all season as well. He earned a first-place finish for Temple at the Duquesne Duals in his first meet as an Owl, and recently placed 20th at the conference championships in a personal-best 24:43.67.
Kacyon was Temple's top finisher at the regional meet a year ago, placing 20th, with Izewski finishing 66th.
