PHILADELPHIA -- Backed by a double-double from junior Feyonda Fitzgerald, the Temple women's basketball team posted a 77-48 win on the road at La Salle on Wednesday night. The Owls move to 2-0 on the season, 1-0 in the Big 5, while La Salle falls to 0-2, 0-1 in the Big 5.
Fitzgerald finished her night with 19 points, 10 assists, and eight boards, registering her first-career double-double. The 10 assists marked the first double-digit helper total for the Owls since Tyonna Williams notched 11 against Oakland in 2013.
"I thought Feyonda played a really good, smart game today," said Head Coach Tonya Cardoza. "In the first half, she wasn't looking to turn the corner as much, but in the second she was able to get by them. If she wasn't getting a lay-up, she was finding the open guy. Her and Alliya set the tone for us, and Fee can make a lot of things happen off the bounce. Her teammates thrive off of that."
Freshman Alliya Butts led all players with 21 points, while sophomore Tanaya Atkinson and senior Erica Covile rounded out the scoring with 10 each. Junior Safiya Martin had a monster night on the boards, pulling down 14 rebounds, while bolstering her stat line with six points and four blocks. Sophomore Donnaizha Fountain wrapped up the Temple box score with six points, five rebounds and a team-best three steals.
As a team, Temple shot 50% from the field (29-58) holding La Salle to just 23.3%. Temple held a slim edge on the glass, out-rebounding the Explorers, 44-43.
La Salle had the edge early in the first frame, going up 6-2 and then leading 10-9 with 6:22 to play. From there, Temple scored 13-straight to close out the quarter with a 22-10 lead. Both Butts and Fitzgerald had seven points each in the first stanza.
Temple continue to surge into the second period, opening up its largest lead of the game, 26-10, with 9:11 until the break. La Salle turned things around, however, as Adreana Miller and Micahya Owens each scored five points during a 10-0 Explorers that run made it 26-20 with 5:15 remaining. Temple was able to rebound, using a 12-4 run to close the half with a 38-24 lead. At the half, Butts led all players with 17 points, while Fitzgerald had nine. Martin led all rebounders with 10 boards at the break.
La Salle scored the first six points of the third quarter, cutting the Temple deficit to 38-30. The Owls responded with an 8-3 run to make it 46-33, before La Salle again answered, connecting on four-straight from the line to make it a 46-37 game with 2:21 to play. Temple got to the line to close out the stanza, and finished with a 6-2 surge to set the score to 52-39 at the end of three.
The fourth quarter was all Temple, as the Owls opened with a 10-0 run and didn't look back. Temple led by as many as 31, and closed out the victory with a combined 25-9 run in the frame.
Temple stays on the road, traveling to Rutgers on Sunday for a 2:00 p.m. tip-off.
