11.18.15 | Women's Cross Country

NEW ORLEANS - Temple's Blanca Fernandez is one of nine Division I female cross country runners to be named a Regional Athlete of the Year by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCA). Fernandez earned the honor for the Mid-Atlantic Region after winning the NCAA regional title on Nov. 13.

Using a strong kick in the final 400 meters, the graduate student from Leon, Spain, surged to a win in the Owls' region to continue what has been an incredible season. It was Fernandez's sixth race of the year and she's registered only wins for Temple. Fernandez also won the Big 5 Cross Country Invitational, the Main Line Invitational, the Paul Short Run, the Princeton Invitational and finally the American Athletic Conference championship on Oct. 31.

Fernandez will be Temple women's cross country's first representative at the NCAA Championships when she competes for the national title at noon on Saturday, Nov. 21 in Louisville, Ky.
