11.20.15 | Football

PHILADELPHIA – Temple head coach Matt Rhule is a semifinalist for the George Munger Collegiate Coach of the Year Award given annually to college football's best coach by the Maxwell Football Club (MFC). Ron Jaworski, MFC President, announced the 2015 semifinalists list which includes a field of 18 candidates for the award who have been selected by the MFC National Selection Committee.

Rhule has led the Temple Owls to an 8-2 record and first place in the American Athletic Conference East Division; as many wins as they had in the previous two seasons combined. The Owls began the season with a school record 7-0 start including an opening day, 27-10, win against Penn State. That marked the first time Temple defeated their in-state rivals in 74 years and 40 tries. The following week, the Owls went on the road to defeat preseason conference champion favorite Cincinnati, 34-26. At 6-0, Temple became a Top 25 ranked team for the first time in 36 years and held a spot in the national rankings for a school record four weeks. During that span, the Temple football team captivated Philadelphia and the rest of the nation that included hosting ESPN's College Gameday and the most watched college football game -  a showdown against #9 Notre Dame on October 31.

The formal presentation of the George Munger Collegiate Coach of the Year Award will take place at the Maxwell Football Club's National Awards Gala on Friday March 11, 2016 at the Tropicana Hotel & Casino in Atlantic City, New Jersey.
