Tyler Matakevich - All-American Candidate
11.4.15 | T. Matakevich - All-American Candidate
2015 Individual Statistics
Few defenders in NCAA have the resume that Tyler Matakevich has compiled at Temple. He continues to lead all active FBS players in career tackles, although he has three less games played than his closest pursuers. He recently collected tackle #400, the third Owl to achieve that. No other player in the FBS has led his team in tackles through every game this season except Matakevich. He does this on a defense that ranks among the nation's best in multiple categories, including scoring, pass efficiency, three-and-outs forced, and rushing. He is a leader on a unit flush with them. Many of the returning starters on this defense are fellow seniors.
          Â
Matakevich has become known for adaptability to situations and making big plays. Against Penn State, he collected three sacks of Christian Hackenberg, eclipsing his career total from the previous three seasons. At Cincinnati, he dropped back into coverage and came up with two interceptions, including one in the end zone to snuff out a potential game-tying drive in the final seconds. Facing Tulane on Homecoming, he set the tone by slicing through the line of scrimmage and collecting a tackle for loss on the Green Wave's first snap. Late at SMU, he thwarted a last-ditch drive on fourth down by batting the pass down at the line of scrimmage. Despite the accolades and accomplishments, he remains a team player, focused on making a bowl game in his final season.
